“Improving Basic Economic Statistics in Support of National Accounts”

Addis Ababa, 16 October 2007 (ECA) - The African Centre for Statistics (ACS) at the Economic Commission for Africa and the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD) are co-convening a Regional Workshop for African countries on Compilation of Basic Economic Statistics on 16-19 October in Addis-Ababa.

The main purpose of the workshop is to identify a list of key issues, which need to be addressed, advise on priorities and to formulate an initial set of recommendations regarding further actions. Senior staff from the national statistical offices of 19 countries, as well as officials from the UN, ECOWAS and the African Development Bank will participate in the meeting.

The United Nations (through the ACS and UNSD) is committed to providing assistance to the national statistical offices of African countries on a long term basis based on a strong national ownership principle and agreed monitoring template of performance indicators.

The strategic goal of this assistance is to significantly enhance the availability, quality and processing in national accounts of basic economic statistics which are relevant for macroeconomic and sectoral policy making and management, and, which also meet the data requirements for decision making within the business community and other sectors.
