A new report says some cultural factors influencing spread of AIDS are specific to Africa

New York , 09 June 2008 (ECA) – A new report released today on the state of HIV and AIDS in Africa says many cultural factors, including gender inequalities, wife inheritance and some sexual practices, that influence the AIDS epidemic and response are specific to the continent and must be better understood and changed. |

leading initiatives against HIV/AIDS, the Commission on HIV/AIDS
and Governance in Africa (CHGA), holds its final meeting in
Washington, D.C., this week at the end of its two-year mandate. |

 Over
100 participants drawn from Africa’s active policy makers,
researchers, associations of people living with HIV/AIDS,
practitioners, as well as non-governmental, faith-based and
community-based organizations representatives gathered in
Morocco to examine the critical HIV/AIDS policy challenges
and delineate specific policy recommendations for the Commission’s
final report, across five pivotal areas: (i) Prevention and
Treatment; (ii) Impact of HIV/AIDS on Gender; (iii) HIV/AIDS
and youth; (iv) Human Capacity; and (v) Financing the response
to HIV/AIDS. |

Morocco TIMES, 25 April 2005
AIDS remains under control in Morocco, with figures reaching
an estimated 16,000 cases, revealed the Minister of Health,
Mohamed Cheikh Biadillah, to the HIV/AIDS Commission and Governance
of Africa (CHGA).
