DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under the direction of the Director of the African Centre for Women (ACW), the incumbent will assist the Centre in the economic and social promotion of women by: undertaking analytical studies and assisting with developing strategies for economic and social policies and programmes relevant to ACW projects and initiatives, particularly for poverty reduction from a gender perspective; assisting with regional, sub-regional, and national economic and social analyses as background studies for advising national governments; assisting with the monitoring, evaluating and reporting on ECA’s Gender Mainstreaming Programme; participating on missions as an expert on economic and social initiatives; organizing networking activities for promoting good practices; and recommending policy proposals for inclusion in reports to African states, international bodies, and other organizations. In general, the incumbent may participate in team projects; prepare documents and other communications such as results of studies, reports, letters, proposals, Website texts and speeches; assist with coordinating elements of the Division's work plan; implement policy and programme initiatives; assist with recruiting consultants; provide technical assistance; and plan and participate in meetings and conferences.

EDUCATION:
Advanced degree, preferably a PhD, in economics or related field is required; advanced study or training in gender and social studies is highly desirable.

WORK EXPERIENCE:
Relevant professional experience required in the application of principles and concepts of economic and social development in relation to women’s development. Facility with modern techniques of analyzing economic and social phenomena required. This background may have been gained in activities such as policy planning, research, academic teaching or related work. Experience in the context of Africa highly desirable.

TECHNICAL SKILLS:
Understanding of economic and social theories and experience in applying economic and social principles to development and management issues as well as a theoretical background in gender analysis. Ability to use quantitative methods of economic and social research and analysis, draw policy implications, and propose options. Proficiency in computer systems, including word processing, data base management and Internet required; knowledge of spreadsheet and statistical packages desirable. Proven abilities to prepare written materials in a clear, concise and compelling manner; and communicate orally in an effective manner.
