Responsibilities |
| Within delegated authority, the Reviser will be responsible for the following duties:
(These duties are generic and may not be carried out by all Revisers.) Revises
translations and original summary records dealing with a broad range of subjects dealt
with by the United Nations. Translates, mostly without revision, texts covering a broad
range of subjects dealt with by the United Nations, particularly those subjects requiring
experience and recognized proficiency. Drafts, mostly without revision, summary records
and serves as monitor of précis-writing teams. Develops new terminology for use where
none exists in the target language. Carries out linguistic research and prepares
terminological bulletins and glossaries, technical vocabularies and related reference
tools. Counsels and assists translators/précis-writers and briefs them on the procedures
and practices of the Service, terminology and a broad range of subjects, as required.
Participates in the setting of terminology standards. Supervises the work of small groups
of translators/précis-writers. Performs other related duties as required. |

QUALIFICATIONS

Education |
| Degree from a university or from an institution of equivalent status. Must have passed
the appropriate United Nations competitive examination. |
|
| Work Experience |
| At least five years of translation and précis-writing experience, of which three
preferably should have been within the United Nations. Knowledge of a broad range of
subjects dealt with by the United Nations (political, social, legal, economic, financial,
administrative, scientific and technical) with a recognized specialization in a particular
substantive, technical or administrative area. Facility in using the United Nations
terminology databases and knowledge of computer software used in the United Nations. |

| Languages |
| A thorough command of any official language of the United Nations, which must be the
incumbent's mother tongue, and excellent knowledge of at least two other official
languages of the United Nations, as tested by the appropriate United Nations competitive
examination. |
|
| Other Desirable Skills |
Knowledge of additional official and/or non-official languages.
|
