Responsibilities
Within delegated authority, the Reviser will be responsible for the following duties: (These duties are generic and may not be carried out by all Revisers.) Revises translations and original summary records dealing with a broad range of subjects dealt with by the United Nations. Translates, mostly without revision, texts covering a broad range of subjects dealt with by the United Nations, particularly those subjects requiring experience and recognized proficiency. Drafts, mostly without revision, summary records and serves as monitor of précis-writing teams. Develops new terminology for use where none exists in the target language. Carries out linguistic research and prepares terminological bulletins and glossaries, technical vocabularies and related reference tools. Counsels and assists translators/précis-writers and briefs them on the procedures and practices of the Service, terminology and a broad range of subjects, as required. Participates in the setting of terminology standards. Supervises the work of small groups of translators/précis-writers. Performs other related duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS


Education
Degree from a university or from an institution of equivalent status. Must have passed the appropriate United Nations competitive examination.
Work Experience
At least five years of translation and précis-writing experience, of which three preferably should have been within the United Nations. Knowledge of a broad range of subjects dealt with by the United Nations (political, social, legal, economic, financial, administrative, scientific and technical) with a recognized specialization in a particular substantive, technical or administrative area. Facility in using the United Nations terminology databases and knowledge of computer software used in the United Nations.
Languages
A thorough command of any official language of the United Nations, which must be the incumbent's mother tongue, and excellent knowledge of at least two other official languages of the United Nations, as tested by the appropriate United Nations competitive examination.
Other Desirable Skills
Knowledge of additional official and/or non-official languages.

  2. To start the online application process, applicants will be required to register by opening a "My UN" account. Go to Login, and Register as a User. Fill in the form and choose a User Name and Password.
  3. After opening the account, applicants may apply for vacancies using the Personal History Profile (PHP) provided. Once the PHP has been completed for a particular vacancy, it can be saved and used for future applications. The PHP may be modified as necessary for future applications.
  4. In completing the PHP, please note that all fields marked with an asterisk must be completed.
  5. For UN staff members, after submission of an application, they will receive an email reminding them to provide copies of their last two Performance Appraisal System evaluations to the appropriate office. These copies may be submitted by email, fax or regular mail with a clear indication of the vacancy announcement number.
  6. Once an application has been submitted, it will be transmitted to the appropriate office for review.
