Follow-up to (Beijing + 10)

Scope

The scope of the planned activities to follow up on the implementation of the Outcome and Way Forward of the Seventh African Regional Conference on Women (Beijing+10) covers the entire continent of Africa. It involves the national gender machineries that are responsible for monitoring and coordinating follow-up activities on gender, as well as the priority sectors selected by the member States out of the following list of priorities:

•  Economic empowerment of women

•  Maternal mortality

•  Land management to ensure access by women

•  Access to trade by women

•  Gender issues of HIV/AIDS

•  Strengthening Institutional Mechanisms

•  Gender issues on peace promotion and conflict management/resolution

Each country will have to formulate a five-year plan of action for the implementation of the outcome of Beijing + 10. The plan of action should include: i) a monitoring strategy that collects data annually on progress made and constraints encountered; and ii) reporting modalities to ECA Committee on Women and Development (CWD) biennially.

Activities

On its part, and in order to support member States in the follow- up to the outcome of Beijing + 10, the African Center for Gender and Development has undertaken the following activities:

1. Prepare a draft strategy document for the implementation of the Outcome and follow-up of the Seventh African Regional Conference on Women. The document includes the following:

•  Proposed elements to be included in the five-year national plans of action for the implementation of priority sectors of the outcome document

•  Proposed indicators for monitoring and evaluating the priority sectors

•  Proposed reporting system of the monitoring reports as required by the CWD

2. Present the strategy document to CWD for discussion and approval

3. Organize five sub-regional training workshops to train senior officials from concerned sectors on the preparation, implementation and monitoring of five-year national plans of action. ACGD follow-up work with member States will be carried out both at the sub regional and national levels.
