GenderNet, Issue 5, 2007
This edition of Gender Net examines this particular issue and tries to take stock of the present situation, with reference to women's access to land, natural resources and capital.
The newsletter sets the tone by analyzing women’s economic rights as stated in various international instruments. It also examines the effectiveness of enforcement of laws affecting their right to land by giving some country examples. The bulletin also focuses on some of the challenges to women’s access to land due to the transition from traditional communal ownership of land and natural resources to the individual ownership-based land tenure. |

Experts to discuss the needs of older people in Africa
Addis Ababa, 15 November 2007- About 20 experts from nine African countries will on Monday in Addis Ababa begin a two-day review of a report on the needs of older people in Africa produced by the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and titled “Aging in a society for all ages in Africa”. |

A Joint ECA - UNIFEM Workshop To Better Use The African Gender and Development Index
Addis Ababa, 5 October 2007 (ECA) - ECA is co-organizing and hosting a training workshop on the African Gender and Development Index (AGDI) that was developed by its African Center for Gender and Social Development. Brainstorming Meeting to Design Sectoral Gender Development Indexes on Agriculture and Trade

Within the framework of creating synergies between ECA's various divisions and programmes, the African Center for Gender and Social Development (ACGS) is collaborating with the African Center for Statistics (ACS) to implement a development account project on 'Strengthening African Statistical Systems to Generate Gender Disaggregated Data" and elaborate sectoral indexes in two specific areas: trade and agriculture.

International Women's Day 2006: ECA Symposium on Women in Decision- Making

Over 200 participants drawn from the international community, the diplomatic corps, the UN system, national and international NGOs, the academia, the media, as well as ECA staff attended ECA's Symposium on Women's Participation in Decision- Making organized in celebration of the International Women's Day at UNCC on 9 march 2006. The selected topic for reflection this year was "women in decision-making" and coincided with the theme of the meeting of the UN Commission on the Status of Women in 2006. |
