THIRD AFRICAN
DEVELOPMENT FORUM
ADDIS ABABA, ETHIOPIA

Dear Colleague,
The purpose of this note is to provide you with
some basic information that we hope will facilitate your work in covering the
Forum and ease your stay in Ethiopia.
Administration and Logistics:
- Travel & Subsistence: Those of you
who are sponsored by ECA will be paid a Daily Subsistence Allowance of US$
84 for each day you are with us. The amount is to cover your hotel bills and
other expenses. You will receive an instruction from the ECA Cashier's Office.
You must take this to the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia in the Rotunda in Africa
Hall, to get cash. You will need your passport and ticket when you go to the
Cashier's Office and to the Bank.
- Hotel: A block booking has been made
for journalists. Aside from a few people, all journalists are booked in the
Imperial Hotel (Tel. 463215/460314, Fax 611892). The daily room rate is US$
32 (including breakfast and taxes). On arrival at the airport, you will be
met by ECA protocol staff and taken to the Imperial Hotel, unless you have
a specific booking elsewhere.
- Transportation: A coach will be available
for exclusive use by journalists. It will leave the hotel at 07:15 hrs each
morning, to reach the UN Conference Centre in time for the 08:00 hrs daily
media briefing (see below).
- Accreditation: The Ethiopian Ministry
of Information requires media representatives to be accredited in order to
provide coverage of the ADF III. You will each be required to complete an
application form and provide one passport-sized photo. The ECA Communication
Team will facilitate the process.

Media Facilities:
- Information Centre: This is located on
the Ground Floor of the UN Conference Centre, and is the place to go for all
speeches, statements and relevant documentation.
- Media Bags and Accreditation: You will
be able to pick up your Media Bags starting from 10:00 hrs. on Monday 4 March
2002 from the Information Centre. The Bags will include background and other
important documents. You will also be able to collect your Media Pass on Saturday,
without which you will not be able to move freely.
- Interview facilitation: The following
individuals are your point of contact for interviews. You will be able to
access a full list of participants on the Desktop of each PC in the Media
Centre, decide who you need to interview, and contact the persons directly
to arrange a suitable time and place. However, If you need assistance with
this, please contact the following:
- Print: Anglophone Print
journalists needing help with arranging interviews should contact Sophia
Denekew (Ext. 35098, direct line 44 50 98) or Meron Aberra
(Ext. 33098, direct line 44 30 98); Francophone Print journalists should contact
Sandrine Mbea (Ext. 33345, direct line 44 33 45)
- Broadcast: Radio and TV
journalists needing help with arranging interviews, or with any aspect related
to space, coverage and transmittal, should contact Martha Mogus
(Ext. 33482, direct line 44 34 82). Francophone Radio and TV Journalists can
also contact Sandrine Mbea.
- Satellite Feeds: Journalists
needing to feed via satellite can do so courtesy of Ethiopian Television.
Contact Ermias WoldeAmlak (Ext. 33339, direct line: 44 33 39)
to organise logistics.
- Internet access: About 20 computers with
full Internet access and connected to a network printer are available for
exclusive media usage. The location of these computers will be clearly signposted.
Colleagues will be available to assist you on demand. A number of PCs are
dedicated for use by radio journalists, and are equipped with Cooledit Pro
software for editing and transmitting actuality. A number of PCs are loaded
with French and Arabic keyboards and software.
- Telecommunications: International calls
can be made from the Business Centre on the First Floor of the UN Conference
Centre. The rates are available on request. Anyone wishing to send stories
by fax should take them to the Information Centre for transmission. Journalists
wishing to receive faxes should use the following number, and should ensure
their names, organizations are clearly marked: +251-1-51 03 65.
Media Events:
- Media Briefing, Monday 4 March, 10:00 AM:
This will take place in the Large Briefing room, 1st Floor, in
the UN Conference Centre.
- Daily Media Briefings, 08:00 hrs: These
will take place in the Large Briefing Room from Tuesday 05 March to Friday
08 March inclusive, and will last 30 minutes.
- Press Conferences, Briefings: We will
give you a list of all scheduled pressers, briefings, etc. This list will
be updated on a daily basis and updates will be provided in the daily media
briefing.
- Weaving the Continent Together: In the
context of ADF III, African Mosaique has organised an evening of culture,
music and fashion which will take place on Thursday 7 March 2002 at the Sheraton
Addis. Tickets are on sale for 300 Ethiopian birr each.
