Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine wrote Biro as a catalyst for
reflection on HIV/AIDS prevention and the struggle for
democracy in Africa. The play is based on the true accounts
of an HIV positive African's journey through Uganda,
Cuba and America.

On July 5th, 2004, Biro was performed at the African
Union summit at a dinner hosted by Ethiopian Prime Minister
Meles Zenawi. In attendance were United Nations Secretary
General Kofi Annan as well as 30 African Heads of State.
H.E President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda and H.E. President
Paul Kagame of Rwanda were also in attendance both of
whom are portrayed in the play.
