Three ISPs are
currently operating in Zambia. The cost of a licence to run an ISP is US$ 40,000. Zamtel has
recently established a full Internet service in competition to Zamnet, and Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines (ZCCM) has established CopperNet.
Zamnet is the first ISP run by the University of Zambia (UNZA).
It was established as a private company by the University which is the major
shareholder. Zamnet runs its services from the University premises and operates now on 256 Kbps.
