Initiative: The Acacia initiative is an international program to empower
sub-Saharan communities with the ability to apply information and communication
technologies (ICTs) to their own social and economic development.
- African
Information Society Initiative (AISI): The African Information Society
Initiative (AISI) is a mission statement for Africa's quest to bridge the digital divide
between Africa and the rest of the world, and to speed the continent's entry into the
information age. AISI is regarded as a guiding framework on which to base information and
communication activities in Africa. AISI was adopted by the twenty-second meeting of ECA
Conference of Ministers in May 1996 and OAU Council of Ministers meeting in its
Sixty-Fourth Ordinary Session held in Yaounde, Cameroon, from 1 to 5 July 1996.
Furthermore, the AISI was endorsed by and the African Regional Telecommunication
Development Conference, organised by the ITU and held in Abidjan in May 1996.
SchoolNet Africa: SchoolNet Africa
-Towards an African Learning Network is an independent non-government organization which
promotes education through the use for Information and Communication Technologies(ICTs) in
African schools. It is the first African-based, African-led, Pan-African school networking
institution. It works in partnership with national schoolnet organizations in up to 28
African countries. It stands for the right of every African child to have access to
Information & Knowledge and to be a global citizen.
African
Virtual University: The African Virtual University (AVU) is a
"university without walls" that uses modern information and communication
technologies to give the countries of sub-Saharan Africa direct access to some of the
highest quality learning resources throughout the world. AVU is bridging the digital
divide by training world-class business managers, engineers, technicians, scientists and
other professionals who will promote economic and social development and help propel
Africa into the knowledge age.
- Bellanet:
Bellanet helps the international community to work together more effectively, especially
using information and communication technologies (ICTs). Bellanet works to help
development partners in the South and in the North improve their use of ICTs and knowledge
to achieve their goals, and connect with the global development community.
- The
Information for Development Program (infoDev): The infoDev began in September
1995 with the objective of addressing the obstacles facing developing countries in an
increasingly information-driven world economy. It is a global grant program managed by the
World Bank to promote innovative projects on the use of information and communication
technologies (ICTs) for economic and social development, with a special emphasis on the
needs of the poor in developing countries.
- International Institute for Communication and Development (IICD):
The International Institute for Communication and Development (IICD) assists developing
countries to realise locally owned sustainable development by harnessing the potential of
information and communication technologies (ICTs). IICD works with its partner
organisations in selected countries, helping local stakeholders to assess the potential
uses of ICTs in development. IICD also aims to strengthen the capacities of its local
partners to formulate, implement and manage development policies and projects that make
use of ICTs. IICD is an independent non-profit foundation, established by the Netherlands
Minister for Development Cooperation in 1997. Its sources of core funding are the
Directorate-General for Development Cooperation (DGIS), the UK Department for
International Development (DFID) and the Swiss Agency for Development Cooperation (SDC).
- International Telecommunication Union (ITU): The ITU,
headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland is an international organization within the United
Nations System where governments and the private sector coordinate global telecom networks
and services.
- Internet
Software Consortium - Internet Domain Survey: The Domain Survey attempts to
discover every host on the Internet by doing a complete search of the Domain Name System.
It is sponsored by the Internet Software Consortium with technical operations
subcontracted to Network Wizards.
