ICT4D media Network

Addressing the role of ICTs in advancing Africa’s development requires society to develop a better under-standing of the new means of interaction offered by the global information infrastructure. Furthermore, African capacities to analyse, assess, and create greater awareness has to be stepped if the continent is to become an active participant in the global information society. In addition to being an essential means for information dissemination, the mass media plays a critical role in spreading awareness in Africa of the importance and benefits of the information revolution. Newspapers, radio and television provide an easy, accessible and cheap means of carrying information to end users. Communities in Africa do not have to wait for the Internet to receive much of the information it carries. The mass media can access many of the existing sources of information and provide broad channels of communications to the poor and to remote areas.

The advent of media pluralism across the continent since the democratization process that is seeing an increasing number of African countries embark on establishing democratic regimes, has given a new lease of life to an emerging, independent media sector in most African nations, making them an important group (as well as the state-owned media) in the awareness-raising activities. To sustain media participation to the Information Society, ICT4D Media Networks creation has begun within member states. Some of the network are advanced and have started implementing their plan of action, media campaign on e-strategies, ICT as a tool for accelerating the Millenium Development Goals and Poverty reduction objectives. These include, networks in Rwanda, Niger and Gambia.
