ECA support to Africa Civil Society in the Information Society

Civil society participation to the information society is crucial for promotion of sustainable and balanced development, human development that is equitable; sustainable; holistic; inclusive of all sectors of society; gender responsive; participatory; people centered and Afro-centric. It can influence policy and ensure that strategies and plans enable the development and the formation of an Information Society based on social justice and human development.

Launch of the Africa Civil Society in the Information Society (ACSIS) Network

ACSIS Network official launched in collaboration with the Government of Tunisia during the African Civil Society meeting that took place from 13 - 15 April 2004 in Tunis, Tunisia. ACSIS is the coordinating body of African CSOs and NGOs participating and/or engaged in the WSIS process. Report

Civil Society and ICT Policy-making Workshop

The Association for Progressive Communications (APC), ARTICLE 19 and the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) jointly organised a five-day information and communications technology (ICT) policy and civil society workshop from November 6th to 8th, 2002 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Civil society groups have been at the forefront in advancing ICT applications in various sectors, however the purpose of this workshop was to build knowledge and expertise of civil society organizations to engage ICT policy processes in Africa. The workshop resulted in a Statement and Plan of Action for African civil society participation in information society development.
