:: Outreach - Civil Society Workshop

Some outcomes of the workshop:

Open source task force for Africa (OSTA) established which resulted in the formation of the Free Software and Open Source Foundation for Africa (FOSSFA) on February 21, 2003 in Geneva. The vision of FOSSFA is to promote sustainable, viable and cost effective software products for Africa through education and local capacity building. More: http://osfa.allafrica.com

 

Greater civil society participation in WSIS process from Africa. The African civil society caucus was formed to ensure active participation of the African civil society in the WSIS process. Particularly, the level of participation of the group during PrepCom2 has been very great. The Caucus has been meeting each day from Monday to Friday. Some of the outcomes include: the Africa Civil Society Caucus (ACSC) endorsed the Civil Society Bureau (CSB) proposal, the civil society representatives of the Bamako bureau are the focal points until a decision is made about alternative representation of the African caucus in the CSB, a proposal was also made that African civil society organizations participate in all different families to articulate our concerns, with respect to the content and themes group there was a also a decision taken to have two representatives on the committee representing African civil society, and all African CS members were requested to feed specific Africa content to the two members representation Africa at the content and themes subcommittee.
