Focus Areas

As an action framework, AISI has been aggressively applied to harness the use of information technology for development. We have worked persistently with member states, policymakers and others to promote the core themes and concepts of AISI's framework. Below is a description of AISI by its focus areas:

e-Strategies

AISI states that although African countries are equally placed to take advantage of ICTs to facilitate their socio-economic development processes, they cannot hope to move their industrually weak, subsistent and agriculture based economies towards information and knowledge based economies unless they develop and implement comprehensive and integrated ICT-led socio-economic development policies, strategies and plans. The NICIs are sets of steps to be undertaken by governments to harness ICTs for development and to implement the objectives outlined by the AISI.

Another focus area related to e-Strategies is the Scan-ICT programme, which monitors the penetration, impact and effectiveness of ICT applications in pilot countries across Africa through approriate ICT4D indicators, providing added value to the AISI implementation at the national, regional and global levels.

Information & Knowledge

Capacity building is an important element determining the success of AISI. The indigenous capacity to aggregate and disseminate information in an efficient manner has tremendous impact on development.

Partnership & Networking

As opposed to "rein
venting the wheel", AISI has sought to consolidate efforts and resources to speak with a unified voice with regard to the potential of ICTs for development.
Outreach & Communication

The Outreach and Communication Programme entails a series of activities aimed at supporting the African Information Society Initiative goals, and it involves all societal actors in addressing the continent’s quest for an information society.
