Professor
Mamadou Gueye
1950 - 2002
Message
of Condolence from UN-ECA
It
was with great shock and sorrow that we learned about the
untimely death of the late Professor Mamadou Gueye. Professor
Gueye passed away on 22 March 2002 in a Dakar Hospital after
a very short illness.
Professor
Gueye, who served as Chairman of the Reform Committee and
the Telemedicine Coordinator at the University Cheik Anta
Diop of Dakar, Senegal, was also the Chairman of the African
Technical Advisory Committee (ATAC) of the African Information
Society Initiative (AISI) since June 2000 (http://www.uneca.org/aisi/atac).
The ATAC is a committee composed of African experts appointed
by Mr. K.Y Amoako, Executive Secretary of the United Nations
Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) based on the resolution
812 (XXXI) of May 1996 of the African Ministers of Planning
and Economic and Social Development.
Major
functions of ATAC include: advising the UNECA Executive Secretary
on the content of its work programme for the implementation
of AISI, assessing the impact of the implementation of AISI
and suggesting ways and means for resource mobilisation for
the implementation of AISI.
Throughout
his tenure, Professor Gueye was discharging the responsibilities
entrusted upon him with utmost interest and diligence. Under
his leadership, UNECA was able to organize a joint conference
between ATAC members and the African members of the G8 Dot
Force, from 10 to 12 May 2001 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The
joint meeting developed the "Common Position for Africa's
Digital Inclusion" a document containing recommendations
towards Africa's contribution to the G8 Dot Force and the
UN ECOSOC Panel on Digital Divide (http://www.uneca.org/aisi/atac.htm).
The
late Professor Gueye was also appointed as the Interim Chairman
of the African Stakeholders Network (ASN) for the United Nations
Information and Communication Technologies Task Force during
a meeting held from 21 to 22 January 2002 in Addis Ababa,
Ethiopia.
We
recognize throughout our co-operation with him his seriousness,
his availability, his kindness and his technical skills as
well as his commitment to serve the development of the continent.
We are not only missing an expert but also a real friend.
To
his wife and children, colleagues and friends, the Executive
Secretary of ECA and the entire ICT staff extend their deepest
condolences. May he rest in peace in the Land of the Holy
city of Touba (Senegal).
