Wins Award
Kaza-Kaza, #Vol. M1. 105
TheAfrican Languages Technology Initiative (Alt-I) has won
one of the 2003 African Information Society Initiative (AISI)
Media Awards of the United Nations Economic Commission for
Africa. The International Institute for Communication and
Development (IICD) Award on Local Content Applications was
awarded to Alt-I based on its work on developing an efficient
and ergonomic Yoruba keyboard for the personal computer, and
for its academic support to the Africa Regional Centre for
Information Science (ARCIS) and the Department of Linguistics
and African Languages, both of the University of Ibadan, in
language technology of African languages.
The IICD Media Award on Local Content recognises the expression
of locally-owned and adopted knowledge of a community in Africa.
In a chat with our correspondent, Alt-Is C.E.O., Mr.
Tunde Adegbola expressed happiness over the award and confirmed
that demonstration keyboards would be ready before the year
runs out.
