NICI Policy Development Process

Seychelles has made considerable progress in modernizing its infrastructure to become a hub for investment and leisure. Seychelles is one of those countries with fully privatized telecommunications and value-added services in Africa. Cable and Wireless provides high-tech telecommunications in Seychelles. In a move to strengthen and expand the telecommunications services available in Seychelles, the government licensed a second operator Seychelles Telecom, a company set up to provide further high-tech telecommunication facilities. Seychelles has two major ISP's with total of 4Mbps expandable, GSM 900 Cellular System with international Roaming with over 50 countries, ISDN services, Internet Services, Local and international digital leased circuits. Twenty percent of the population is now connected to cell phones. A National Strategy on ICT has been put in place. The implementation started on many sectors linked to trade and capacity building. The Ministry of Information Technology and Communications (MITC) coordinates the information and communication technology strategy.

Seychelles has modern banking facilities including a well-developed electronic banking network, automated bank tellers, SWIFT and Direct Debit (EFTOPS) facilities. In addition to automating the public institutions, the government has launched a major initiative to develop ICT-skills. A national curriculum has been revised to integrate ICTs into the education systems.
