Tunisia has an advanced information and communications infrastructure and a good research base in ICTs. Tunisias approach to information society development has been positioning information and communication technologies as key drivers for the economy. Tunisia has state-of-the art technology parks of which El Ghazala was considered as one of the Venture Capitals of the world by Wired Magazine survey in July 2000. It has strong research centers and good universities teaching and researching on modern ICT tools and techniques. Tunis' Institute of Advanced Business Studies offers MBA programme in information technology and electronic commerce. In addition to strong economy and excellent infrastructure, Tunisias long standing endorsement of information and communication technology helped the country to use ICTs to transform major sectors of the society such as education, healthcare (telemedicine), government (paperless administration), commerce (electronic commerce) and manufacturing sector (electronic processes). Tunisia has also placed great value on education. The countrys annual budget generally allocates more than 20 percent of the Government operating budget for primary and secondary education, a figure that is among the highest in the world. Education in Tunisia is free and accessible to everyone. Furthermore, schooling is compulsory between the ages of 6 and 16. A large-scale effort is underway to connect businesses as well as education and research establishments to the Internet. The establishment of private Internet service providers, proliferation of virtual Souks, creation of enabling environment for electronic commerce and establishment of telecenetrs and cyber cafes have been the driving forces and for the success to information and knowledge in Tunisia. Secondary schools, universities, research institutions and medical centers are already connected to the Internet. Tunisia is making considerable progress in connecting all primary schools to the Internet. Tunisia has a National Policy
and a strategy of implementation. The implementation of the strategy has also started and
the regulatory and institutional tools have been put in place to promote ICT for
development. |
