NICI Policy Development Process

 

Botswana's Ministry of Communications, Science and Technology was tasked with producing a National ICT Policy for Botswana. The policy was to be built upon Vision 2016 - Botswana’s long term strategy. Botswana's Information and Communications Technology (ICT) policy vision and objectives were developed in April 2004. This led to the finalization of Maitlamo, Botswana's draft ICT policy, in January 2005.

The objectives set in the draft ICT policy document are:

  • Creation of an enabling environment for the growth of an ICT industry in the country,
  • Provision of universal service and access to informatiuon and communication facilities in the country, and
  • Making Botswana a regional ICT Hub so aso to make the country's ICT sector globally competitive

To this effect the following activities are highlighted for implementation:

  • Connecting communities programme
  • Governemnt-On-Line
  • ThutoNet (development of ICT skills in children and young adults)
  • e-Health Botswana
  • ICT and Economic Diversification
  • Connecting Botswana
  • Connectivity Laws and Policies
