Telecommunication Infrastructure
The Office Congolais des
Postes et des Télécommunications (OCPT) is the public telecommunications
operator in the Democratic Republic of Congo. OCPT is responsible to the Ministère
des Postes et Télécommunications. Gecamines which is the
biggest mining company in the country has its own private telephone network with 6,000
lines in the Katanga province.
The Ministère des Postes
et Télécommunications is currently responsible for regulating the
telecommunications sector as an independent regulatory authority has not yet been
established.

The following are the major
cellular operators:
- Telecel is the
first private cellular company operating an AMPS network since 1989. It has about 10,000
subscribers in the capital city, Kinshasa, and four other main cities.
- Comcell is another
AMPS cellular network operator which started in 1993, and it has around 2,000 subscribers
in 10 cities.
- Tatem is also
another AMPS cellular network covering only the port city of Matadi.
- TAT got a license
to operate a TABS-based cellular system in 1993 but it is not yet operational.

The Archives
Nationales is operating the Réseau Documentaire Informatisé (REDI)
with assitance from the Agence de la Francophonie.
The Réseau
de Gestion par l'Informatique et la Télématique ZedNet is collaborating with
UNDP toward the development of Internet in the Country. It assists also students in the
use of the network.
HealthNet: There is a HealthNet node
in Democratic Republic of Congo which uses the low earth-orbiting satellite to exchange
messages.

Radio broadcasters: Radio
Television Nationale Congolaise (RTNC) is a state-owned agency transmitting on medium
wave, shortwave and FM in French, Swahili, Lingala, Tshiluba and Kikongo languages.
Other FM stations are:
Radio RMV, Radio Elikia, two missionary stations and Radio Sangomalamu.
Television broadcasters: RTNC
has a wide coverage in the country.
TVKIN is a private TV 3 channels in
Kinshasa, and Antenne operates as a private TV station.
