Structure and Policy
In 1997, Correos
y de Telecommunicaciones which used to be the government department responsible for the
telecommunications sector was dissolved and La Sociedad Anonima de Telecomunicaciones de la
Republica de Guinea Ecuatorial (GETESA) was established as a government-owned company. France Cable et Radio, a
subsidiary of France telecom, holds a 40 percent stake in GETESA, Equatorial Guinea's
national and international carrier, and the remaining 60 percent of GETESA is owned
by the State.
The Directorate of Posts
and Telecommunications is responsible for the regulation of the
telecommunications sector.
The telephone network is
underdeveloped, and there is no cellular service.

ICT
Networking Development
The Centro
de Estudios Informaticos is the major networking institution in Equatorial Guinea
and the national focal point for the UNESCO/Regional Informatics Network (RINAF).
The Centro
de Investigaciones Cientificas y Technologicas (CICT) is responsible for the
national archives.
The national
telecom operator, GETESA, is
the sole provider of Internet services in the country linking via a 64 Kbps link to Paris,
France.
