The Seychelles
consists of some 115 islands and islets scattered over the Indian Ocean just south of the
equator, some 1,600 km east of Mombasa and Dar-es-Salaam. Some 75 of them are
virtually uninhabited volcanic islands and islets. Mahé is the largest island
accommodating over 88% of the total population. The Seychelles gained their independence
from Britain in June 1976.
The main economic
activities are tourism and marine fishing, along with some agriculture and small-scale
manufacturing. Tourism absorbs some 30% of the work force and provides more than 70% of
hard currency earnings. Seychelles recently joined the Southern African Development
Community (SADC), and it is also a member of the Indian Ocean Commission and of the Common
Market for Eastern and Southern African States (COMESA).
Seychelles
telecommunications network is fully privatised. In 1999, the network had a total of 19,600
connected telephone lines, resulting in a telephone density of 24.42 per hundred
people.
