On June 15, 1999, preparations have started for the elaboration of national information and communication plans for Sudan. Focus has been made on five major areas:

1. Technology (infrastructure);

2. Human Resources Development;

3. Software industry;

4. Content (infostructure) in Arabic; and

5. Geo-information.

A study was conducted to document the status of ICT in the country. A workshop was planned for mid-September 1999 to discuss the outcome of the study and to elaborate work plans and projects for integration in the overall national plan.

A national ICT strategy is formulated and a high level Ministerial Committee is overseeing the implementation. The country is currently seeking partners to implement the national strategy, including e-government projects, the development of an electronic smart city, distance learning and telemedicine.
