African Information Society Initiative (AISI) e-strategies

:: Outreach on Information Society Development

The Outreach and Communication Programme entails a series of activities aimed at supporting the African Information Society Initiative goals, and it involves all societal actors in addressing the continent’s quest for an information society.

Specific objectives include:

  • Creating greater awareness on the information society within the AISI framework;
  • Stimulating national debate through the production of targeted outputs and joint collaboration with the media in various countries;
  • Sensitising decision and policy-makers on ICT issues and trends and implications for the development process;
  • Encouraging various stakeholders and partners in the development process to develop the information society across Africa;
  • Developing strategies for greater access to the information society by various groups including, women, youth, the poor and disadvantaged;
  • Encouraging the development of appropriate ICT socio-economic frameworks that nurture innovative and creative applications to suit the African context.
:: Outreach Activities
Information Outputs on the work of the AISI, including:
  • Briefing Papers that provide insights and useful information to decision-makers and the international community;
  • Radio documentaries and programmes on ICTs and its relevance to the development process that would  be broadcast by radio stations across the continent in English and French;
  • Video documentaries on the policy and NICI processes to encourage other countries to follow suit, as well as serve as a resource for other purposes, such broadcasting by TV stations in Africa;

    The publication of diverse reports on ICT trends and developments as a result of research findings;
  • The creation of specific on-line resources to effect interactive communication between various stakeholders on the continent.

Sensitisation programmes that will create greater awareness among key stakeholders on:
  • Civil Society and ICT Policy-making Workshop - Workshops that provide various groups with relevant information on ICTs for development to be organised through the Information Technology Centre for Africa.
  • Effective Use of ICT to Create a New Environment for Learning and Teaching, 29 July to 1 August 2002, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The workshop was organised under the aegis of the four Foundation partnership (Ford/Carnegie/MacArthur/Rockefeller) in collaboration with ECA. The theme for the conference is “Effective Use of ICT to create a New Environment for Learning and Teaching”, bringing together 25 people from African universities and centers that are implementing ICT in a meaningful way.   • The African Diaspora electronic discussion list that aims at engaging the African Diaspora in an online discussion forum in the area of ICTs for social and economic development in Africa.
  • The creation of an ICT Information Clearing House that can provide member states with the relevant information on ICTs and the African Information Society.
  • African Academia and the Information Society, 15-16 June 2003, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. ECA is collaborating with The Ford Foundation to provide a platform and space for a select group of leading African academics to reflect on the many intellectual issues that they face as they develop strategies for enhancing their role in the information society.
