Training Workshop on the Participation of the Civil Society in the APRM Process
28-30 July 2008, Bamako , Mali

Summary

A Training Workshop on the participation of the Civil Society Organization (CSO) in the process of African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) was held from 28 to 30 July 2008, at Hotel Massaley, Bamako, Mali.

The workshop was organized by the “Association du Sahel D'aide à la Femme et à l'enfance (ASSAFE)” in collaboration with ECA, which is one of the Strategic Partner Institutions of the APRM, and Partnership Africa Canada (PAC).

About sixty-five (65) representatives of civil society organizations from sixteen (16) West African countries, Canada, Ethiopia, United Kingdom and Kenya attended the workshop.

The main objective of the training workshop was to facilitate dialogue among civil society representatives in those countries, gain a deeper understanding of their role in the APRM process and contribute effectively towards the implementation of APRM in their respective countries as well as the adherence of the countries that have not yet adhered.

The Minister of Malians Living Abroad, African Integration and APRM focal point of the Republic of Mali, chaired the opening ceremony. Mr Kojo Busia, Chief of APRM Unit and Mr. Nangnigui David Kamara of the Civil Society Section of GPAD represented ECA at this workshop.

A final communiqué, containing few recommendations addressed to the various stakeholders was read and the closing ceremony was chaired by the Ministre du développement social de la solidarité et des personnes agées” of the Republic of Mali.
