| APRM Sensitization Workshop, Lomé, Togo, 19 to 20 May 2009
The “INADES-FORMATION of Togo” in close collaboration with Partnership Africa Canada (PAC) organized APRM peer learning and sensitization workshop in Lomé, Togo from 19 to 20 May 2009.
The main objectives of the workshop were to reinforce African institutions’ capacity building in good governance namely the performance of good economic governance and the rooting of a democratic culture in Togo; to provide to the stakeholders i.e. the government, CSOs, parliamentarians and private sector, tools and arguments to stimulate and encourage Togo in its efforts to get through APRM process and deepening their knowledge on their respective role in the APRM process.; to share experiences from APRM pioneer countries and to encourage the full participation of civil society organizations and private sector to the national structures namely the National Governance Council and other entities in charge of supervising the evaluation process.
ECA, as one of the strategic partners to the APRM process participated in the workshop by sending its staff, Mr. David Kamara, from Governance and Public Administration Division who served as a technical resource person. His participation was in presenting three papers: on “The impact of APRM on the challenges of good governance”, on “The Role of CSOs in APRM process” and on “The structures and steps of the APRM process”.
The workshop brought together about seventy Togolese participants from parliament, private sector, government bodies, civil society organizations, traditional leaders, diplomatic representatives, and other stakeholders. Participants included State Minister and the current president of the National Governance Council of Togo, Mr. Charles Kondi Agba, and two former ministers of the Government of Togo. Representatives of Civil Society Organizations from Benin, Senegal and Côte d’Ivoire have also attended the workshop to share their experiences from their respective countries and organizations. The Togolese authorities finally reiterated their commitment to fully implement the APRM process and also expressed their need of assistance from ECA while undergoing the process.
