The Government of Denmark Grants ATPC US$ 800,000.

December 16, 2006

The African Trade Policy Centre (ATPC) has received a grant of US$ 800,000 to facilitate its work in strengthening the participation of African countries in international trade processes.

Her Excellency Ms Mette Knudsen, the Ambassador of Denmark to Ethiopia, presented the grant on Friday 15 December, after signing a memorandum of understanding (MOU) at the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Receiving the grant on behalf of ATPC, the Officer-in-Charge of ECA, Mr Youssif Suliman, commended the Ambassador for Denmark's participation in and contributions to ECA activities. “The MOU between the Government of Denmark and Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), which we have just signed, is a good testimony of your partnership and support,” he said.

Mr Suliman added that the grant would help ATPC support African countries which currently find themselves at crossroads in two important negotiation processes. Firstly, there are the multilateral negotiations under the Doha Round at the World Trade Organization (WTO). Secondly, the Economic Partnership Agreements (EPAs) negotiations between African countries and the European Union (EU), which are now entering the text-based negotiations phase .

“ This is where the work of the African Trade and Policy Centre becomes very vital - through providing technical support to the African countries in the EPA and WTO negotiations,” he said.

Background

The African Trade Policy Centre (ATPC) is a project of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), established to strengthen ECA's efforts to back up African countries efforts to increase participation in international trade processes.
