Experts
call for more ECA, UNDP and ATPC support on trade policy issues.
African
trade experts have called on the United Nations Economic Commission
for Africa (ECA), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and
the African Trade Policy Centre (ATPC), to continue providing much
needed technical assistance to enable member States mainstream trade
in their national development plans. The call came at the end of
a ad-hoc experts group meeting on mainstreaming trade into national
development strategies, held in Casablanca, Morocco from 29 - 31
May.
The
meeting explored how to strengthen the capacity of African countries
to formulate effective trade policies and integrate them into national
development and poverty reduction strategies. Several papers covering
technical issues as well as country experiences were presented and
discussed.
The
experts further concluded that more work is needed on the diversification
of African economies into emerging sectors that create value-added;
on developing industrial policies; and to counter new forms of protectionism
such as rules of origin, and the application of product and environmental
standards, that are faced by African exporters. Presentations are
attached.
Participation
The
meeting was organized by ECA and ATPC in collaboration with UNDP
and the government of the Kingdom of Morocco. Other participants
included representatives of selected African, Asian and Latin American
countries, African Regional Economic Communities, the World Trade
Organization (WTO), the International Trade Centre (ITC), the Joint
Integrated Technical Assistance Programme (JITAP), the Integrated
Framework (IF), UN Regional Economic Commissions, and African civil
society groups.
