The Global Climate Observing System (GCOS)
Implementation Strategy meeting has started at ECA, hosted by
the Sustainable Development Division (SDD). The World Metreological
Organization (WMO), the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and
International Research Institute for Climate and Society (IRI)
with the support of UK Department for Internation development
(DFID) and the UNDP’s Global Environment Facility (GEF)
have jointly organized the meeting.
Opening remarks has been delivered by Mr.
Abdoulie Janneh UN Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary;
Dr. Babagana Ahmadou on behalf of President Alpha Oumar Konare,
Chairperson of the Commission of the African Union, Mr. Alexander
Alusa, Deputy Director of Division of Environmental Conventions,
UNEP; President WMO RAI (Africa), Dr. M.S. Mhita; and the GCOS
Chairman Mr. Zimmerman. It was officially opened by Minister Asfaw
Dingamo, , Ministry of Water Resources, of Ethiopia.
The purpose of this meeting is to agree
on two sub-Sahran African regional implementation plans for the
effective delivery and use of climate information in support of
attaining the Millennium Development Goals. It is being attended
by more than 90 participants from the international community,
government officials, UN-Agencies and other International organizations
representatives and the donor organizations. It will be running
18-21 April 2006.
