PROVISIONAL ANNOTATED AGENDA

Second Meeting of the Committee on Sustainable Development Addis Ababa, Ethiopia 26-29 November 2001

1. Opening of the Meeting

  1. Opening remarks by the outgoing Chairman of the Bureau of the CSD.
  2. Opening address by a representative of the Executive Secretary of the ECA.
  3. Welcome address by a representative of the Government of Ethiopia.

2. Organizational Matters

  1. Election of Officers: A chairperson, three vice-chairpersons and a rapporteur will be elected to the Bureau. Each elected official will come from one of the five sub-regions.
  2. Adoption of the Agenda and Programme of Work: The meeting will examine the proposed Agenda and Programme of Work for adoption.

Session 1: Presentations on implementation of plans of action emanating from global and regional conferences and other substantive reports.

Under this agenda item, the five reports listed below will be presented and discussed in plenary. Member states are expected to advise on how ECA should continue to assist them in the implementation of these plans of action.

a) Progress Reports

  1. International Conference on Population and development (ICPD-PA) and Dakar/Ngor Declaration (DND). The report referenced ECA/FSSDD/POP/CSD/01/2 will be presented for discussion.
  2. Regional African Ministerial Conference on the Implementation of Habitat Agenda (Istanbul+5). Report ECA/UNCHS/IST.+5/00/1 will be presented and discussed.
  3. World Food Summit. Report ECA/FSSDD/CSD/01/3 on the Review and Appraisal of the Implementation of the World Food Summit will be presented and discussed.
  4. United Nations Conference on Environment and Development. Report ECA/FSSDD/CSD/01/2 on the Review and Appraisal of the Implementation of Agenda 21 in Africa will be presented and discussed.

b) Other

  1. Science and Technology for Food Security and Sustainable Development: Report ECA/FSSDD/S&T/CSD/01/05 on Management of Technology in Newly Industrialising Countries: Lessons for Africa will be presented and discussed.

Session 2: Panel discussion on "Agricultural Intensification: Feeding Ourselves and Sustaining Africa's Natural Resources in the new Millennium"

a) The theme paper on the above topic will be presented by Dr. Michael Foster, Country Director, Uganda, Sasakawa Global 2000 Agricultural Project for Africa.

b) The main presentation will be followed by four discussants, each of whom will discuss the implications of agricultural intensification in an area of the nexus of population, agriculture and environment and in the area of science and technology.

  1. Discussant in the field of population and development: - Mr. John Oucho, Director, Global Programme on Population and Development, University of Botswana.
  2. Discussant in the field of food science and nutrition - Dr. Ruth Khasaya Oniang'o, Professor Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, Nairobi, Kenya.
  3. Discussant in the field of natural resources and environment - Prof. Osuntogun Caleb Adeniyi. National Program Coordinator, Foundation for Environmental Development and Education in Nigeria (FEDEN) & Leadership for Environment and Development (LEAD), Nigeria.
  4. Discussant in the field of science and technology - Prof. C.J. Chetsanga Director General Scientific & Industrial Research & Development Centre (SIRDC), Harare, Zimbabwe.

Session 3: Report on Activities: Progress Report on the Implementation of the 2000-2001 Work Programme.

a) Progress made by the FSSDD in the implementation of the various components of the 2000-2001 Work Programme will be reported and discussed.

Session 4: Presentation and discussion on the Work Programme for the Biennium 2002-2003.

This presentation will mainly be for information as the Work Programme is already approved.

Closing of the Meeting

a) Presentation and adoption of the report of the meeting: The draft report on the deliberations of the meeting will be examined and adopted.

b) Closure of the meeting: The meeting will be officially closed.
