The Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and its partners
will award deserving African journalists for reporting
on the effective use of Information and Communication
Technologies (ICTs) in development on the continent.
The awards ceremony will be held during the third Global
Knowledge Conference (GK3) taking place in Kuala Lumpur,
Malaysia from 11 – 13 December 2007. [more]

“We need no less than a scientific revolution
in Africa,” said Abdoulie Janneh, UN Under-Secretary-General
and Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for
Africa (ECA) to EU parliamentarians last week in Brussels.
The EU parliamentarians as well as representatives from
the Council, Commission officials, industry representatives,
stakeholders and policy makers had gathered for a preliminary
hearing on the “Science with Africa” Conference
to be hosted by ECA and other partners in March 2008

Twenty
participants, comprising managers of community access
points, telecentre network leaders, project coordinators
and managers of ICT initiatives from eight countries
are attending a two-day “Regional Stakeholders
Workshop on Knowledge Network Strategies, Mechanisms
& Tools” at the Holiday Express Hotel in Kampala,
Uganda. The participants are from Burundi, Ethiopia,
Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Recognizing
that Africa’s social and economic development
is predicated on the careful assessment, identification,
and operationalization of national development priorities,
the role of high-quality data and information to support
such informed decision-making readily comes to the fore.
As geospatial data and geoinformation are widely accepted
as essential components of the body of knowledge that
informs national development strategy, then a pan-continental
and common definition of what constitutes a minimally
necessary core of geospatial data and information products

At
the occasion of the Second anniversary of the second
phase of the World Summit on the Information Society
(WSIS) held in Tunis in 2005, the Tunisian Government
is organizing the ICT 4 All Forum at the Medina Conference
Centre, Hammamet, Tunisia. The event, which includes
a forum and a technological exhibition, puts together
high-level policymakers, government officials, representatives
from the private sector, potential investors as well
as experts from international organizations.

Trimble
Donates GPS Reference Stations to Africa
Addis Ababa, 13 November 2007
Trimble,
the world leader in professional GPS equipment manufacturing
and positioning solutions, has donated equipment for
five GPS reference stations to Africa through ECA. The
donation was first announced during a workshop in Nairobi
in August 2007 on the "African Reference Frame" (AFREF)
and confirmed during the just-concluded (5 - 7 November
2007) "Trimble Dimensions" user-conference in Las Vegas,

Connect
Africa Summit adopts five goals to bridge the digital
divide in Africa
Addis Ababa, 6 November 2007
The
Connect Africa Summit which took place in Kigali, Rwanda,
on 29 - 30 October 2007, ended with the adoption of
five goals to bridge the digital divide in Africa. The
Summit, which was held under the patronage of the President
of Rwanda, Mr. Paul Kagame, gathered over a thousand
participants from 54 countries, including six Heads
of State and Government. Forty-three countries in Africa
were represented, including 23 at the Ministerial level.

Participants
call for a scaling up of policy implementation activities

Over forty African policymakers and other stakeholders
reached consensus on the need to move from policy development
to implementation as most countries had developed policies
which remained unimplemented for various reasons. The
participants urged the ECA and its partners to continue
supporting this process to ensure that benefits from

in Maputo, Mozambique for Anglophone countries (28 to
30 May 2007), is the second for Africa. Over thirty
participants from eighteen Anglophone countries composed
of ICT focal points and representatives of gender machineries
are in attendance. The first workshop was held in Tunis,
Tunisia in June 2006 for Francophone countries.

the World Summit on the Information Society to build confidence

plan to curb cybercrime. The announcement was made by
ITU Secretary-General Dr Hamadoun Touré at a ceremony
