Participants also included representatives from the UN family agencies and partners working on gender issues and women’s rights.

Addis Ababa, 19 October 2009 (ECA) - Experts attending the inaugural meeting of the ECA Committee on Human & Social Development ended their meeting today with a commitment to scale up efforts to accelerate progress toward the achievement of the millennium development goals (MDGs) and the Plan of Action of International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) in Africa. There is an urgency in light of the slow rate of progress of in social development in Africa, with just 5 years to the end date of ICPD and 6 years to the 2015 target date for the MDGs.

Addis Ababa, 11 May 2009 (ECA) - United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), the Federal Ministry of Finance of the Republic of Nigeria, the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President of Nigeria on MDGs in collaboration with the World Bank organized a conference on “the role of sub-national jurisdictions in efforts to achieve the MDGs in Africa”, held from 7-9 May 2009 in Abuja, Nigeria. The Conference explored and interrogated the role of sub-national jurisdictions in efforts to achieve the MDGs in Africa and proposed policy recommendations for consideration and adoption by African policy makers.

This edition of Gender Net examines this particular issue and tries to take stock of the present situation, with reference to women's access to land, natural resources and capital.

The newsletter sets the tone by analyzing women’s economic rights as stated in various international instruments. It also examines the effectiveness of enforcement of laws affecting their right to land by giving some country examples. The bulletin also focuses on some of the challenges to women’s access to land due to the transition from traditional communal ownership of land and natural resources to the individual ownership-based land tenure.
