APPALLING FACTS AND FIGURES ON VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN

All forms of violence are on the increase

HIVpositive women are subjected to violence, even murder

Violence against women (early marriage, trafficking, forced prostitution, incest and rape…) all put women at risk of contracting HIV

4 Million women are sold and bought every year

Women are the first to take care of the sick and the dying of Aids, and the last to get life saving treatment

600 million women are illiterate (among the 900million in the world)

Girls in Zimbabwe represent 70% of the children pulled out of school to take on the burden of health care (recent UNIFEM study)

Over 120 million girls and women have undergone some female genital mutilation (recent WHO study)

Between10%and 50% report they have been abused by an intimate partner in their life time

Between 12% and 25% have experienced forced sex by an intimate/or ex-partner some time in their lives

A quarter of all women are raped during their life time

6 women are raped daily in Ethiopia (2000-2001)

60 women died in Kenya due to domestic violence (1999)

25% to 75% of women are regularly beaten at home, depending on the country

2 million women are beaten daily

1 woman is beaten every18 minutes in the US

Between 22% and 35% of women visit emergency room for this reason

36,000 women in the RussianFederation are beaten by their husbands or partners daily

One Russian woman is killed in domestic violence every 40 minute. This is roughly equal to the number of soldiers who died in the 10 year-long war in Afghanistan

56% of Indian women justify domestic violence
