GPAD Seminar on the World Bank's Role in Fragile States
Addis Ababa , 27 June 2008 (ECA) – As part of its regular series of in house seminars and discussions, GPAD, on 24 th June, invited Mr. Alastair McKechnie, Director of the World Bank's Fragile and Conflict-affected States Group, to brief ECA staff on his organization's work in this area.
In his presentation Mr. McKechnie informed the audience of the Banks' new strategic orientation, under the new President Robert Zolleck, which places increasing attention on meeting “the challenge of reconstruction in states harmed by modern conflicts”. He also outlined how, as part of this new approach, the Bank and other partners are now placing a special emphasis on key linkages between development, peace and security; hence, of peace-building and state-building. Additionally, Mr. Mckechnie emphasized the need to take a differentiated approach to situations of fragility and conflict and presented case studies of the Bank's interventions in DR Congo, Liberia, Sudan (Darfur), Afghanistan and Kosovo.
His presentation was followed by an hour-long discussion on the concept of fragile states and post-conflict reconstruction in Africa with staff members from GPAD and several other ECA divisions.
Mr. McKechnie's visit is part of the evolving strategic partnership between the ECA and the World Bank, especially on governance and post conflict programmes.
