Anti-retroviral therapies for HIV/AIDS in Africa: Using Advocacy to increase access and deepen impact
Presenter: Yinka Adeyemi, ECA, Information and Communication Service
Synopsis: It is generally agreed that in the absence of a curative HIV/AIDS vaccine, about 24 million Africans who are living with HIV/AIDS will probably die within the next few years This is why research into vaccine development has gained momentum in recent years. Indeed, in 2005, the Yaounde Statement and Recommendations of the African AIDS Vaccine Programme (AAVP), an instrument for furthering the AU/NEPAD Health Strategy, called on African leaders, the AU, NEPAD and the RECs to integrate HIV/AIDS vaccine development into national HIV/AIDS plans. African health ministers in eastern, central and southern sub-regions have also passed a resolution calling for the development of HIV vaccines. This paper notes that CSOs are best suited to hold leaders to account. But they will be successful only to the extent that they effectively use information and scale up knowledge on ongoing research. CSOs should also forge crucial broad partnerships beyond their traditional allies in pursuit of a new regional agenda to offer free HIV/AIDS services to everyone who needs them, regardless of the ability to pay. :: Download paper |
