What Does ISTD do?

:: Policies and Plans
The African Information Society Initiative (AISI) remains the key framework for the development and implementation of national e-strategies of National Information and Communication Infrastructure (NICI) plans. With ECA's assistance, approximately 32 African countries have already developed such strategies and in the coming years, efforts will be geared towards financing the NICI process, building the implementation capacity of relevant institutions and stakeholders and harmonizing regulatory and legal frameworks.
:: Promoting information for decision-making
ECA provides training on the potential synergies created by combining statistical techniques and spatial data with a specific application to poverty mapping and country poverty profiles.

:: Building NICI implementation capacity

In order to empower and build local capacity to speed up the process of the implementation of NICI plans, ECA provides regulatory and policy expertise, multimedia resources, guidance and advisory services in support of among others, governance issues, especially in the context of the e-Policy Resource Network (ePol-NET) of which ECA is the African Regional Node.

:: Knowledge sharing and outreach

Raising awareness constituted AISI's major activity at its initial launch. This has now been expanded and targeted at a broad spectrum of stakeholders through its Knowledge Sharing, Outreach and Communication component, where emerging topics like Internet governance, intellectual property rights and African languages for content development feature.

ISTD's Information Technology Centre for Africa (ITCA) offers ICT policy online manuals and training for policy makers, parliamentarians and media through its Virtual Learning Project. ITCA has further expanded on existing activities through providing applications to support local governance land administration and HIV/AIDS awareness in Ethiopia. The project will provide critical information through multimedia and touch-screen kiosks in several local languages.
