The 2009 African Statistics Day
Addis Ababa, 18 November 2009 (ECA) -The African Statistics Day (ASD) is celebrated every year on the 18th of November. This event was initiated in 1990 by the Subsidiary Body of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), the Joint African Conference of Planners, Statisticians, and Demographers.

Addis Ababa, 26 August 2009 (ECA) - The 57th Session of the International Statistical Institute (ISI) 2009 concluded in Durban South Africa on the 22nd August to widespread acclaim from the statistical fraternity.  The session lasted from 16th August and was held in sub-Saharan Africa for the first time in the institutes 124 year history.

Addis Ababa, 06 August 2008 (ECA) - The Republic of South Africa is hosting the 57th Session of the International Statistical Institute (ISI) 2009, from 16 – 22 August in Durban, South Africa.  This is the first time in the history of ISI - which stretches back to 1885 - that this premier event for statisticians world-wide is being hosted in sub-Saharan Africa.  The theme of ISI 2009 is Statistics: Our Past, Present & future.

On 10 October 2008, Dr. Edwin N. Forlemu, the Executive Secretary (a.i) of the African Capacity Building Foundation (ACBF) visited the African Centre for Statistics. ACBF, based in Harare, Zimbabwe is an independent capacity building institution established in 1991 through a collaborative efforts of three multilateral institutions - the African Development Bank (AfDB), the World Bank, and UNDP, African govenments and bilateral donors.

African countries have validated a proposal for an African Charter on Statistics, which aims to guide the collection, dissemination and use of statistical data across the continent to allow easy monitoring of development indicators and cross-country comparisons.

Addis Ababa, 1 May 2007 - The Advisory Board on Statistics in Africa (ABSA) has commended the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) for establishing a new division for statistics and further called on the commission to ensure that the new division is adequately staffed and funded in order to fulfill its vision of becoming a lead agency for statistics in Africa.

National Strategies for the Development of Statistics (NSDS): Statistical Planning at the Service of Dynamic Development

The African Statistics Day (ASD) is a yearly advocacy tool aimed at raising awareness of the importance of Statistics in the economic and social development of Africa. Celebrated every year on the 18th of November, the event was initiated by a former Subsidiary Body of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), the Joint African Conference of Planners, Statisticians, and Demographers. This body has been replaced by the Committee on Development Information (CODI), which perpetuated the celebration of the ASD.
