UN Organizations review activities in support of NEPAD Infrastructure programme

By Yinka Adeyemi, 23 May 2006

UN organizations working in support of NEPAD infrastructure programme today met in Addis Ababa within the framework of the Regional Consultations mechanism to assess progress made and challenges ahead.
The NEPAD Infrastructure Cluster is composed of four sub-clusters - on water/sanitation; energy, transport and ICT.

In an opening statement, the Director of ECA’s Office of Policy and Programme Coordination, Robert Okello, said that the work of UN organizations in support of NEPAD was still constrained by financial/budgetary challenges; the limited engagement with non-UN organizations and some institutional/human factors internal to NEPAD and the regional economic communities.

The meeting was attended by representatives of ECA, UNDP, UNIDO, UNESCO, African Development Bank (AfDB) and the African Union Commission.
