The Trade, Finance & Economic Development Division (TFED) focuses on issues relating to macroeconomic analysis, including monitoring of macroeconomic trends and macro-micro linkages.The Division consists of four sections and a center, i.e. the Industry and Sectoral Policies Section (ISPS), the Financing Development Section (FDS), the Trade and International Negotiations Section (TINS), the Macroeconomic Analysis Section (MAS), and the African Trade Policy Centre (ATPC). The Division is lead by Mr. Hakim Ben Hammouda, Director TFED.

Forthcoming ERA 2009 calls for big-push on agriculture

Addis Ababa, 22 May 2009 (ECA) - The global economic crisis will hit African economies hard during the course of 2009, according to the forthcoming Economic Report on Africa 2009. The report, jointly published by the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and the African Union Commission (AU), will be launched on Thursday May 28. The theme of this year's report is:  “ Developing African Agriculture through Regional Value Chains .”

Addis Ababa - 1 December 2008 – A representative of the African Trade Policy Centre (ATPC), which is based at the headquarters of the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia recently attended a workshop in Bonn, Germany to discuss African (member States and Regional Economic Communities (RECs)) expectations from the Aid for Trade (AfT) initiative.

UN Under-Secretary-General and ECA Executive Secretary Abdoulie Janneh led the Commission's delegation to the Follow-up International Conference on Financing for Development to Review the Implementation of the Monterrey Consensus which officially opened in Doha, Qatar on 29 November.

ECA-CA and ATPC strengthen capacity in Cameroon on regional integration issues and instruments in Central Africa.

On 17-19 November 2008, the African Trade Policy Centre (ATPC) and ECA's Trade Finance and Economic Development Division (TFED) contributed to a capacity-building seminar on the concepts and operating modes of regional integration instruments in Central Africa.

Addis Ababa, 31 October 2008 -ECA)-: The second phase of the African Trade Policy Centre (ATPC II) has been launched with programming missions to the Secretariats of the East African Community (EAC) from 8-9 September 2008 and Southern African Development Community (SADC) from 25-26 September 2008. A similar mission is planned to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) by the end of 2008.

First Edition of ATPC II News Launched

ATPC II has launched its new newsletter ATPC II News. This edition of the newsletter is dedicated to ATPC II programming missions to the East African Community (EAC) and Southern African Development Community (SADC) Secretariats, and proposals on an African template for the Economic Partnership Agreements (EPAs) between African countries and the EU prepared by ATPC and discussed at a workshop in Addis Ababa from 8-10 October 2008. The newsletter also reports on a recent mission of a team from the Gender Equality and African Regional Institution Project (GEARI) to Addis Ababa, and ATPC studies and events on trade facilitation.

ATPC II launched with Programming Missions to EAC and SADC Secretariats

As part of activities to launch the second phase of the African Trade Policy Centre (ATPC II), a programming mission was undertaken to the Secretariat of the East African Community (EAC) in Arusha, Tanzania from 8-9 September 2008. A similar mission was undertaken to the Secretariat of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) in Gaborone, Botswana from 25-26 September 2008.

ECA-AfDB-OECD- Latest “African Economic Outlook” Report Forecasts Stronger Regional Economic Growth in Near Future
Addis Ababa , 12 May 2008 (ECA) - The 2007-2008 African Economic Outlook report, jointly published by the African Development Bank (AfDB), the OECD Development Centre and the ECA, reports that Africa's rate of GDP growth is expected to strengthen to approximately 6.0 per cent in 2008 and that this level is likely to be maintained in 2009.

ECA Survey Finds Limited Progress in Implementation of Monterrey Consensus in Africa
Addis Ababa, 22 October 2007 (ECA) - The results of a recent survey by the Economic Commission for Africa suggest that, in general, very limited progress has been made in realizing the objectives of the Monterrey Consensus on Financing for Development. ECCAS meeting welcomes ERA 2007 recommendations

The key findings of the 2007 Economic Report on Africa (ERA, were presented last week in Brazzaville (Republic of Congo) to the Council of Ministers of the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS). This was the first briefing session on the report for a sub regional body since its official launch in April in Addis Ababa, during the Conference of African Ministers of Finance, Planning and Economic Development. ERA 2007, which was jointly published by ECA and the African Union Commission, focuses on the theme "Accelerating Africa's Development through Diversification.
