Whats CODI?
The meeting of the CODI, organized
every two years by ECA, is being convened in accordance with Resolution 826 (XXXII)
adopted in May 1997 at its twenty-third meeting by the ECA Conference of African Ministers
responsible for Economic and Social Development and Planning. Ensuring the implementation
of the African Information Society Initiative (AISI), the CODI has also subsumed the
functions of the Joint Conference of African Planners, Statisticians, Population and
Information Specialists, and of the United Nations Regional Cartographic Conference for
Africa. The Committee is one of ECAs seven subsidiary bodies and provides policy and
technical guidance for the sub-programme "Harnessing information for
development". It reports on its sessions to the Conference of Ministers of the
Economic Commission for Africa. CODIs ToR is available at: http://www.uneca.org/codi
The CODI acts as a node that attaches
regional dimensions to information strategies and programmes. It helps to define,
articulate, and agree on common positions to foster the cooperation among member States
and with their partners.
The first CODI was
held from 28 June to 2 July 1999, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on the theme: Harnessing
information for development. The second meeting (CODI II) was held from 4 to 7
September 2001 on the theme: Development Information and Decision Making.
