What’s CODI?

The meeting of the CODI, organized every two years by ECA, is being convened in accordance with Resolution 826 (XXXII) adopted in May 1997 at its twenty-third meeting by the ECA Conference of African Ministers responsible for Economic and Social Development and Planning. Ensuring the implementation of the African Information Society Initiative (AISI), the CODI has also subsumed the functions of the Joint Conference of African Planners, Statisticians, Population and Information Specialists, and of the United Nations Regional Cartographic Conference for Africa. The Committee is one of ECA’s seven subsidiary bodies and provides policy and technical guidance for the sub-programme "Harnessing information for development". It reports on its sessions to the Conference of Ministers of the Economic Commission for Africa. CODI’s ToR is available at: http://www.uneca.org/codi

The CODI acts as a node that attaches regional dimensions to information strategies and programmes. It helps to define, articulate, and agree on common positions to foster the cooperation among member States and with their partners.

CODI I & CODI II

The first CODI was held from 28 June to 2 July 1999, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on the theme: “Harnessing information for development”. The second meeting (CODI II) was held from 4 to 7 September 2001 on the theme: “Development Information and Decision Making”. Further information is available at: http://www.uneca.org/codi

The theme of the meeting is “Information for Governance”.

Format of the meeting

For operational reasons, and so as to enable CODI discharge its responsibilities in an effective, coordinated and focused manner, the meeting is organized in plenary and Sub-committee sessions. To that effect three sub-committees have been established in each of the specialized fields, namely: Information and communication technologies, library, documentation and information services; Geo-information; and Statistics.

The sub-committees may establish ad-hoc or standing workings groups, as necessary, for the duration of the meeting, between meetings and as long as necessary. A joint report on plenary and sub-committees meetings shall be agreed at a final plenary meeting.

Apart from the plenary and the sub-committees sessions, a series of workshops are planned to take place in conjunction with the meeting. The topics of the workshops are still being defined, and interested participants are invited to make their suggestions to the programme committee. Tentative topics include spatial data clearing house and metadata, e-governance/government, virtual library networks for governance, statistics for improved governance, etc.
