Key Courses

GEO 203: ELEMENTS OF GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEM (GIS)

The course deals with the following topics: Defination and scope of GIS Geographic data in GIS; Spatial data integratiuon of geographic data; Types of data inputs into GIS; Class of Data: points, lines; contineous fields of homogeneous division; structure for geographic data in IS; locational structure and projections for representing geographic data; spatial relaationships and data storage in vector in vector-based GI; layered data base

GEO 312: CARTOGRAPHY

Map making from compilation through reproduction; development of skills in drafting, generalization, symbolization, design, and familiarization with map sources.

GEO 416: GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEM (GIS)

Handling and analyzing spatially - referenced data. Digital cartography; remote sensing technology and GIS data structures and data base design; drum scanning for digitizing prepared maps; spatio; and other algorithms design; software engineering; mapping problems into GIS terms; point line area commands. Relevance of GIS to resource managers, market researchers, planners, property assessors, administrators, policy makers, etc.

GEO 417: REMOTE SENSING AND CARTOGRAPHY

This course teaches students the interpretation of physical and cultural geographic phenomena as recorded by orbital and aerial sensing systems. Emphasis is on the data recorded and the interpretation techniques and advance work with map production. Contemporary aerial photographs, satellite and radar data are used. Topic to be covered are: Principles of electromagnetic radiation; image characteristics; source of remote sensing information, characteristics of aerial photographs, remote sensing systems - spectral scanner system and their image characteristics; acquisition of satellite images and interpretation methods; advantages of satellite imagery - thermal infrared imagery, radar imagery; land use and resource inventory and mapping from aerial photographs and map reproduction processes.
