The University of Cape Town is a vibrant academic community of some 16 000 students and 4 500 members of staff. The main campus occupies a beautiful site on the slopes of Table Mountain. The Department of Geomatics at UCT is the oldest Geomatics/Surveying department in South Africa, and it is also the first to embrace the expanded discipline of Geomatics. The Department offers a four-year BSc (Survey) degree, awarded by the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment. The department offers Masters and Doctoral degree too. The under graduate is a four year course extensively deals with GIS. The department has its own GIS laboratory and with some facilities and gives some GIS courses.
