The University of Mauritius Act, 1971, providing for the present Constitution and Statutes, received the assent of H.E the Governor General on the 31st of May, 1971 and came into effect on 1st July 1971. The act establishes the fundamental powers and structure of the University and defines its purpose and entity as a legally independent body. There are five faculties in the University. There is a Center for Distance learning which was established in 1993.
