Resolutions Adopted ByThe Economic and Social Council (ecosoc)During its Twenty-fifth Session29 April 1958671A(XXV) Establishment of an Economic Commission for Africa The Economic and Social CouncilHaving considered General Assembly Resolution 1155 (XII) of 26 November 1957 recommending that for the purpose of giving effective aid to the countries and territories of Africa and in accordance with Article 68 of the Charter of the United Nations, the Economic and Social Council, at its next session, give prompt and favorable consideration to the establishment of an Economic Commission for Africa. Bearing in mind the views expressed by the African countries Ethiopia, Ghana, Liberia, Libya, Morocco, Sudan, Tunisia and the United Arab Republic, and by the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the views of other delegations expressed in the Council. Establishes an Economic Commission for Africa with the following terms of reference: 1. The Economic Commission for Africa, acting within the framework of the policies of the United Nations and subject to the general supervision of the Economic and Social Council, shall, provided that the Commission takes no action with respect to any country without the agreement of the Government of that Country: (a) Initiate and participate in measures for facilitating concerted action for the Economic development of Africa, including its social aspects... (b) Make or sponsor such investigations and studies of economic and technological problems.... (c) Undertake or sponsor the collection, evaluation and dissemination of such economic, technological and statistical information as the Commission deems appropriate: 5. Membership of the Commission shall be open to: Belgium, Ethiopia, France, Ghana, Italy, Liberia, Libya, Morocco, Portugal, Spain, Sudan, Tunisia, the Union of South Africa, the United Arab Republic and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and to any State in the area which may here- after become the member of the United Nations.... 1017th plenary meeting
