ECA Business Plan Launched

November 22, 2006

The new 2007-9 ECA Business Plan was officially launched on 16th November 2006 in Addis Ababa. The launch event was a component of a special ceremony which also included the signing of the Declaration on “Enhancing AU-UN Cooperation: Framework for the Ten-Year Capacity Building Programme for the African Union” by the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Mr.Kofi Annan, and the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Alpha Oumar Konare.

At the ceremony, the new Business Plan was strongly endorsed by the Secretary-General and Mr. Konare, who, respectively, wrote the Preface and Foreword to the document. It details how ECA has repositioned itself to address Africa's present challenges as well as how it plans to work with the African Union Commission (AUC), the African Development Bank (AfDB), the Regional Economic Communities (RECs), and other development partners to address the continent's priorities. At the same time, it shows how the Commission will play a leading role within the UN system in its support to the implementation of the NEPAD agenda. It therefore presents a clear picture of how one key UN entity in Africa, ECA, plans to implement a new work programme, within the context of the overall mission set out in the Framework for the Ten-Year Capacity Building Programme for the African Union.

The launch of the document, which was formally introduced by Mr. Donald Kaberuka, the President of the African Development Bank, took place before an audience composed of the Addis Ababa diplomatic corps and other partners. The response from all invitees to the release of the Business Plan was positive and supportive.
