About 25 technical advisers on water today began a two-day meeting in Addis Ababa to assess the status of implementation of various ministerial decisions on water which emerged out of the 5th Ordinary session of the African Minister's Council on Water (AMCOW) in Entebbe last year.

The ministerial decisions pertain, especially, to the mobilisation of support for, and contributions to, the AMCOW Trust Fund which has been established at the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in response to a request by AMCOW.

The advisers will discuss the operationalization of the $650 million African Water Facility housed at the African Development Bank, the outcomes of the UN-Water/Africa seminar on gender and water resources management in Africa and the TIGER Project on Space-Water-Africa.

The experts will also discuss a comprehensive communication strategy for AMCOW and explore the modality for enhancing relationship between the African Union and AMCOW.

The advisers, drawn from all five African subregions, are from Nigeria, Ghana, Burkina Fasso, Ethiopia, Algeria, South Africa, Namibia, Egypt, Tunisia, Mauritania, Republic of Congo and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Representatives of UN-Water/Africa, the European Union, the African Union, NEPAD and the African Development Bank are also participating in the technical meeting.

Their recommendations will be submitted to the Executive Committee of AMCOW on Wednesday for ratification. The Ministers will, on Thursday meet with development partners to concretize a plan of action on the various issues discussed by the technical advisers.
