ECA’s Sustainable Development Division (SDD) has released the first issue of its repackaged annual publication, Africa’s Sustainable Development Bulletin, formerly called “Africa’s Population and Development Bulletin”.
According to a Foreword written by K.Y. Amoako, ECA`s Executive Secretary, the new Bulletin will demonstrate the interdependent linkages between different economic and social sectors and stress that Africa must make simultaneous progress on multiple fronts in order to develop in a sustainable manner.
“If Africa is to advance, we must achieve sustainable development. For us at the Economic Commission for Africa, this implies the integration of two key goals - human well-being and natural resource stewardship,” says K.Y. Amoako.
Published in English and French, the Bulletin, which succeeds the five-year old Population and Development Bulletin, provides a vehicle through which SDD presents policy briefs on trends and policies related to agriculture, food security, population, human settlements, natural resources and the environment. The Bulletin is also intended to be an advocacy instrument targeted at raising policymakers’ awareness on these nexus issues in sustainable development planning.
A range of factors are critical to the attainment of sustainable development in Africa. The inaugural issue of the ASDB focuses on issues such as agricultural transformation, management and use of Africa’s land, water and mineral resources, the progress made in achieving the goals set at the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD), and the impact of HIV/AIDS on rural households.
