The Communities and Small-scale Mining, Africa (CASM-Africa) ended its inaugural meeting yesterday in Addis Ababa and adopted a three-year work programme as part of its business plan.
CASM-Africa said its work programme was aimed at "profiling and better understanding" the present and potential contribution of artisanal and small scale mining to the MDGs.
It also aims to advocate the inclusion of artisanal small-scale mining (ASM) considerations into national development strategies and plans, including poverty reduction strategies.
CASM-Africa said it would also build sustainable ASM communities by im[proving and enhancing ASM rights and responsibilities and better integration into formal economies.
