TRID publishes two transport books
By Andrew Allimadi, 13 December 2004

The Trade and Regional Integration Division (TRID) of the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) has published two new comprehensive volumes on transport and development in Africa. The publications are in French and are titled: Les transports et l’intégration régionale en Afrique; and La Décision de Yamoussoukro et le transport aérien en Afrique. The books were published in collaboration with the respected French publishing house, Maisonneuve & Larose, and copies can be obtained from all good bookstores or directly from the publisher.

Les transports et l’intégration régionale en Afrique La Décision de Yamoussoukro et le transport aérien en Afrique Les transports et l’intégration régionale en Afrique looks at the linkages between economic development and an efficient integrated transport infrastructure. It clearly catalogues the poor state of transport infrastructure in Africa, and demonstrates the key role transport can play in economic development. Readers will be left in no doubt as to the urgency of developing the transport sector, without which, an integrated African economy will remain a pipe-dream; and several millennium development goals might be missed.

La Décision de Yamoussoukro et le transport aérien en Afrique charts the bold attempt by African leaders to transform the air transport sector of the continent. This transformation began with the adoption of a new legal framework for an open sky’s regime in Africa, with the adoption of the Yamoussoukro Decision by African heads of state. The book traces efforts made to implement this landmark decision and identifies challenges that need to be overcome if air transport is to make an effective contribution to socio-economic development in Africa.
