Mauritian Officials complete an ECA-organized training on use of modeling software for trade agreements

7 February2007

Mauritian officials who completed a two-day training workshop organized last week in Port Louis by the country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, University of Mauritius and the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) are now able to use modeling software to assess the impact of changes in trade policy and tariff schedules on the domestic economy.

The objective of the training is to anticipate and minimize damages that may arise from ongoing trade negotiations.

Presentations focused on the use of World Integrated Trade Solution software and the WITs/SMART partial equilibrium models, which are tools, developed by the World Bank and UN Conference on Trade and Tariffs for policy experiments.

Mauritius is currently involved in a wide spectrum of trade negotiations including Economic Partnership Agreements, the Doha Round, the SADC Trade Protocol and the COMESA Common External Tariff regime.
